I started reading 1984, and though I'm only 41 pages in, it's impressive to reflect on the real world through the book. I'll likely make more posts like these, as I like to reflect on this.

Of course, I already read that passage about women being the main supporters of The Party, but what I just read, and what made me write this, is the conversation in the cantina about development of Newspeak, and how they're removing words from Oldspeak (normal English) to make communication more efficient and Though Crime impossible. This parallels really well with the destruction of education, but also the way younger people seem to communicate in certain groups.

Being a gamer myself, I do know the efficiency of BRB, BIO, MB, etc. in mlutiplayer contexts, but this isn't as much Newspeak as it is coded language, which is similarly used in different professions. However, when compared to videos of people on the streets, especially the ones fighting for their "rights" and fighting against people and groups they dislike, you see a more Newspeak-esk variant in these, where certain buzz words are used to communicate "traitor", "bad person", and indeed "Though Criminal" between the minds of their Party. If you try to engage them and dig into their deeper thoughts, then they lack the vocabulary to articulate their thoughts behind their slogans and hate; they simply repeat simple words they don't understand, but which have a meaning they've been programmed with.

You clearly see the destruction of literacy in younger people, when they have a hard time explaining themselves outside of their buzz words. Videos of black people especially shows how they're using fewer and fewer words, but still communicating well enough with each other, though the range of topics, and the depth of discussion, are really narrow. Meanwhile, an outsider will have a hard time interpreting their meaning, which isolate them more and reinforces their use of the language.

Orwell was indeed ahead of his time with this book of fiction, as it is easy to draw parallels between organized actions in the book with, what seems to be, unorganized results in the real world. And we all have the power to reverse it at our fingertips, but those who need the help are too blinded to accept it. Such a tragedy, but we will need to solve this eventually, and for some, it will be too late.
